Yet despite being much nearer to the north pole than to the equator, bananas, tree ferns, South African Erica and a range of palms flourish outside without any winter protection."

The Japanese Gardens at Tully were created between the years 1906-1910. Devised by Colonel William Hall-Walker (later Lord Wavertree), a wealthy Scotsman of a famous brewery family and laid out by the Japanese Eida and his son Minoru. June Blake's garden extends over three acres and contains an ecletic collection of plants from around the world. The Gardens at Killruddery are the oldest in Ireland still surviving in their original 17th century unique style together with 18th and 19th century additions. The Gardens were designed for the entertainment of a large number of people and therefore the scale is comparable to that of a park. The Gardens should be regarded as mainly the work of the 4th and 6th Earls. A French Landscape architect named Bonet, a pupil of Le Notre, was known to have been employed by the Earl of Meath in 1682.

In 1994, when the de Las Casas family bought Larchill, the follies were derelict, the lake had been drained and the walled garden lost to grazing. With a grant from the Great Gardens of Ireland Restoration Programme and a FAS Community Employment project, the garden, follies, lake and parkland were restored between 1994 and 1999.

"The historic gardens at Lismore Castle are divided into two very different halves. The Upper Garden is a complete example of the 17th century walled garden first constructed here by Richard Boyle, the 1st Earl of Cork, in about 1605. The outer walls and terraces remain and the plantings have changed to match the tastes of those living within the Castle. The Lower Garden was mostly made in the 19th century for the 6th Duke of Devonshire, Joseph Paxton's patron. This garden is informal with shrubs, trees and lawns, and the stately Yew Avenue is much older, perhaps from the 17th century."

Established in 1977, the Floral and Tropical Park of the Court of Aron works within the micro-climate of this region of France, the Vendee: Planting includes Tulip orchids, carnivorous plants in the greenhouses, multicoloured Iceland poppies, Japanese iris and papyrus from Egypt. You are lead naturally to water gardens where you mix with koi and see unique water planting. Beyond the arches of bamboo groves eucalyptus, banana and palm trees, you will discover, as early as July, the lake covered in Lotus Flowers. Native to Asia Lotus Flowers are unique in Europe and not to be missed if you are anywhere near the Parc Floral.
