One Bean Row - Words and Pictures from an Irish Garden - Jane Powers I’m a garden writer and photographer living in Ireland. I write the weekly gardening column in The Irish Times Magazine, and I contribute to various other publications in Ireland and the UK. I’m working on two books at the moment. The first, The Living Garden: a place that works with nature, will be published in April (2011) by Frances Lincoln. The name of this blog, One Bean Row, is inspired by Yeats’ poem The Lake Isle of Innisfree, and its much-quoted line: “Nine bean rows will I have there, and a hive for the honey bee”. Although Yeats wanted nine rows of beans (which makes me think he’d never actually grown a bean), for me one is plenty.

thinkinGardens You’ll find here a collection of challenging, entertaining and exciting garden writing, all contributed for free by some of our very best garden writers. The thinkinGardens Group has been set up, with the support of the Royal Horticultural Society, in its role as a learned society, to encourage and develop a broader, more enquiring attitude to gardens. This will encompass the aesthetic of gardens, the philosophy of gardens, and what gardens mean or can offer. The Group’s work is aimed at stimulating both gardeners and non-gardeners alike.
