Landscape Architecture, or landscape design, is the science and art of creatively manipulating and planning the natural environment in order to deliver a result that is beneficial to the environment and to its inhabitants. Landscape architecture is urban and rural in is its application of baseline analysis and design and both University College Dublin and Wikipedia have published excellent articles that describe this discipline.

The landscape architect is somebody who is grounded in the sciences and in the art of delivering landscape solutions. Their strengths lie in their ability to carry out baseline site assessments upon which the design solutions are layered.
Clients can expect a much more detailed approach to that which may be taken by a traditional garden designer, and among other deliverables that the landscape architect will produce, are the following:
- Baseline survey and site assessment.
- Preliminary design & planning report.
- Final detailed design drawings plus contract documents consisting of bills of quantity, preliminaries, specifications and management programmes
He or she is usually most at home as part of a design team, where the team are responding to the needs of the client, working together with other professionals such as the building architect, the quantity surveyor and the project manager in order to deliver results determined by a pre-defined brief and scope of work. The brief and scope of work is most often defined by the landscape architect, working closely with either the client and/or the leader of the design team.
While many landscape architects will undertake garden design work, they are usually employed to provide design solutions as part of a design team on projects other than one-off residential projects. Their skills are often employed to provide integration of the proposals with the existing built environment. This can consist of a number of measure including, but again not limited to, visual, social, historical, and cultural integration. Therefore in practical terms, in order to obtain the very best from the input of your landscape architect, the landscape design should be considered by the client and the design team as an integral and fundamental part of the design process for the site. The landscape architect must be on board from the beginning of the project.
